We are looking for an Apprentice Engineer to join the business as we prepare for further growth. Working alongside our Chief Engineer to assist with tooling requirements, you will receive training and support as you complete a Level 3 Machining Technician Apprenticeship.

Overview

This Level 3 Machining Technician apprenticeship provides the opportunity to gain practical engineering experience within a manufacturing and toolmaking environment while developing skills in machining, tooling, maintenance and fabrication. The role involves working alongside the Chief Engineer to support tooling requirements and contribute to the design, repair, maintenance and improvement of engineering equipment.

Apprentices will develop practical skills in milling, drilling, assembly, machining, pattern work and sampling, as well as repairing and modifying existing tooling. The role also involves setting up and operating conventional or CNC machinery, selecting and maintaining tooling, measuring components, carrying out machine maintenance, following quality procedures and identifying and resolving faults.

The apprenticeship is suited to someone who is practical, logical, creative, organised and interested in engineering and manufacturing. Good attention to detail, problem-solving skills, communication and teamwork are important for the role. Alongside practical workplace experience, apprentices will complete the Level 3 Machining Technician qualification with Luminate Education Group, attending Leeds City College Printworks Campus one day each week. The apprenticeship is three years and nine months, with a full-time position available upon completion.

Training to be Delivered

  • Develop practical machining skills by preparing, setting up, operating and adjusting conventional and CNC machines.
  • Learn how to select machining processes, tooling and work-holding equipment and set appropriate machine operating parameters.
  • Develop skills in milling, drilling, assembly, toolmaking, pattern work, sampling, repair and modification of engineering components.
  • Learn how to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical information and documentation while applying engineering, mathematical and scientific principles.
  • Develop skills in measuring and checking components, carrying out inspections and following quality assurance procedures to ensure work meets required standards.
  • Learn how to identify faults and manufacturing issues, carry out diagnostic testing and take appropriate action or escalate problems when required.
  • Develop knowledge of health and safety, risk assessment, hazard identification, safe machine operation, isolation procedures and maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Learn about environmental and sustainability practices, including the safe disposal, recycling and reuse of materials and efficient use of resources.
  • Develop professional skills in planning and organising work, teamwork, communication, record keeping and continuous improvement.
  • Complete a nationally recognised Level 3 Machining Technician qualification alongside practical workplace experience.
