The IT Apprentice provides first-line technical support across hardware, software, and networking systems while working toward a recognised IT qualification. This role offers hands on experience in resolving technical incidents, maintaining network and backup systems, and undertaking technical development projects.

Overview

This Level 3 Information Communications Technician apprenticeship provides the opportunity to gain practical experience providing IT support while developing skills across hardware, software, networking and systems. The role involves acting as a first point of contact for technical issues, helping users resolve problems and supporting the maintenance of IT systems and infrastructure.

Apprentices will develop practical skills in troubleshooting hardware, software, Wi-Fi, VPN and network connectivity issues, as well as building, configuring and deploying computers and other devices. The role also involves managing user accounts and access permissions, carrying out software updates and system patches, checking backups, maintaining accurate support records, and assisting with technical projects and infrastructure maintenance.

The apprenticeship is suited to someone with a genuine interest in IT who has good communication skills, attention to detail and an understanding of Microsoft Windows, computer hardware and Wi-Fi. Alongside practical workplace experience, apprentices will complete the Level 3 Information Communications Technician qualification with Luminate Education Group. Training takes place through two Leeds City College sessions each month, with one session at Print Works Campus and one delivered online, and a full-time permanent position is highly likely upon successful completion.

Training to be Delivered

  • Develop first-line IT support skills by diagnosing technical issues, responding to support requests and providing remote or face-to-face assistance to users.
  • Learn how to troubleshoot hardware, software, Wi-Fi, VPN, internet and network connectivity problems using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Develop skills in installing and upgrading software, configuring devices, maintaining systems and carrying out routine IT infrastructure maintenance.
  • Learn about networking, including cabling, connectors, LAN devices, wireless access points, network monitoring, DNS, firewalls and network security.
  • Develop knowledge of user accounts, access permissions, data storage, encryption and protecting personal and organisational information.
  • Learn how to identify, investigate, test and resolve technical problems, escalating non-routine issues in line with organisational procedures and service level agreements.
  • Develop professional skills in customer service, communication, workload management, documentation, teamwork and maintaining effective relationships with colleagues and customers.
  • Gain experience with basic scripting, including tools such as PowerShell and Linux, while developing continuous professional development and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Complete a nationally recognised Level 3 Information Communications Technician qualification alongside practical workplace experience.
