Introduction

T-Level in Legal Services will give young people the skills required to progress to University or a career in the legal sector. This course consists of a 45 day placement coupled with certification that is equivalent to 3 A-Levels opening opportunities for students to progress to University, apprenticeship or employment.

Overview

This qualification offers learners a fantastic opportunity to learn important theoretical knowledge of how a Legal Services team operates alongside gaining hands-on experience in the workplace, to ensure they can have a meaningful impact when they progress into the world of work. This course has been developed alongside leading employers for students wanting to work in legal services in a legal assistant’s role and is designed to help build the required knowledge and skills for the sector.

Who is this course for?

The course is for ambitious 16-18 year old people who want to pursue full-time education, but still want to develop the key business knowledge and skills that will support pursuing a career in the legal sector.

Course units/modules

The Business Environment: An exploration of the broader economic and commercial context in which legal service providers operate, including market forces, business structures, and commercial awareness.

Careers: Detailed insight into the diverse roles, pathways, and specialisms within the legal sector, from solicitors and barristers to paralegals and legal executives, including the necessary skills and qualifications for each.

Regulation: A thorough understanding of the regulatory framework governing the legal profession, including the roles of bodies such as the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Bar Standards Board (BSB), and the importance of compliance.

Professionalism and Ethics: Deep study into the core professional principles, values, and ethical duties that underpin the provision of legal services, focusing on integrity, client confidentiality, and conflicts of interest.

Security and Risk: Examination of security protocols, including data protection, physical security, and cyber security within a legal context, alongside identifying, assessing, and mitigating professional and operational risks.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI): Understanding the legal and ethical requirements relating to EDI in the workplace and in the provision of legal services, ensuring fair access to justice and promoting an inclusive environment.

Professional Services: An overview of how legal services fit within the broader professional services landscape, exploring client service excellence, stakeholder management, and the difference between professional service firms and other businesses.

Fundamentals of Law: Introduction to key legal concepts, principles, and sources of law, covering areas such as the English legal system, contract law, and tort law, providing the foundational legal knowledge.

Fundamentals of Financial Accounting:Basic understanding of financial principles, accounting practices, and interpreting financial statements, which is vital for commercial awareness and managing client accounts.

Technology: Study of the current and emerging technologies transforming the legal sector (LegalTech), including case management systems, AI applications, and e-discovery tools.

Data Driven Innovation/Analytics and Design Thinking: Developing skills in leveraging data for decision-making, using legal analytics, and applying design thinking principles to improve the efficiency and user experience of legal services.

Research Skills: Mastering the ability to conduct effective legal research, locate authoritative sources of law, analyse statutes and case law, and synthesise information for legal problem-solving.

Project/Change Management and Administration: Core skills in managing legal projects, handling administrative tasks, and understanding the processes involved in managing organisational change within a legal firm or department.

The Legal Services Sector: A comprehensive macro-level analysis of the structure, key players, trends, and challenges within the entire legal services industry, both domestically and internationally.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including English and maths.

Available apprenticeships and progression options

If you have a passion to start a career in legal services this T Level offers an exciting alternative to A levels and Apprenticeships. The T Level will help to develop knowledge and understanding of a range of subjects including Civil Law, Civil Process and Dispute Resolution, Employment Law, Business, Finance Law and Insolvency and implementing projects.

Assessment types

Core element of the course as well as an employer set project. Year 1 consists of two exams and an employer-set project. Year 2 consists of an occupational specialist assignment based project in team leadership/management.
