Bespoke open days for adult learners

Posted: August 26, 2021

Leeds City College’s community centres; Deacon House and Rothwell Centre, are opening their doors for adult learner open days, in a drive to improve prospects for adult students across the district.

This drive is part of the national Festival of Learning; a celebration of adult learners across the country. As part of the festival, Luminate Education Group, including Leeds City College, has teamed up with partners across the region to promote lifelong learning through taster sessions, open days and short courses.

Deacon House

Based in Seacroft, Deacon House offers personalised learning and career guidance to adult learners across the district.

Margaret Shutt, Deputy Head of Community at Leeds City College, added: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming prospective students on the open day. Please feel welcome to come in to meet us and ask questions, so that we can guide you to study online or in Deacon House Centre.”

Its expert staff and inclusive environment makes for a community-centered setting where adults are inspired to develop skills, progress to further education or work and pursue pastimes.

Taking place on Wednesday 1 September from 1pm to 4pm, the open day will give adults the chance to speak with tutors, discuss funding and enrol.

The centre offers a diverse range of vocational, essential skills and leisure courses, including English, maths, digital skills, business administration, teaching and childcare.

Rothwell Centre

Rothwell Centre provides a space for adult learners within the local community to upskill, change careers or try something new, with a range of employability and leisure courses.

On Thursday 2 September from 1pm to 4pm, the centre will be inviting prospective adult students to hear more about the courses and opportunities available.

Wendy Lane, Deputy Head of Community at Leeds City College, commented on the event: “This open day is a fantastic opportunity for adults to ignite their passions and embark on an exciting new learning journey. Curriculum staff from English, maths, IT, digital, childcare, counselling and hairdressing, will be on hand to talk about their courses and answer any questions.

“Adults are welcome to turn up during the day to meet with us to discuss suitability, have assessments if appropriate, apply for funding and enrol. We would encourage attendees to bring proof of previous qualifications if they are applying for a higher level course and haven’t studied with us before.”

Adults do not need to book and are welcome to turn up to the event during the day.
