Students bake up a storm for local charity

Posted: July 1, 2021

Twelve Patisserie Level 2 students have been expressing their culinary craft by producing decorative cupcakes for Maggie’s Leeds.

Based in St James’s University Hospital, Maggie’s is a cancer support charity which offers free one-to-one help. Whether you want to drop by for a cuppa or talk to other people who are affected by cancer, the charity offers a calming space for the Leeds community.

On Saturday 12 June, Maggie’s opened their gardens to the National Garden Scheme; an initiative which gives visitors unique access to gardens across the country to raise money for nursing and health charities.

To support in raising money for the scheme, students from the School of Travel, Food and Drink volunteered to produce, decorate and box impressive cupcakes for the event. In preparation, students baked three types of cupcakes, mixed the buttercream and planned the decoration.

Leeds City College is passionate about supporting the community through volunteering as part of the Kinder Colleges project, encouraging students and staff to become champions of kindness.

Fabrice Teston, Programme Manager of Hospitality, Travel and Tourism, helped organise the volunteering. He said: “This event sparked such enthusiasm among our students. They were able to use the skills they’d developed during the year, including practical abilities such as piping and decorating, paired with team working skills.

“Participating in charity projects allows our students to understand the value of volunteering and community engagement, giving them the chance to enhance their interpersonal skills. We hope to work together with Maggie’s on more projects in the future.”
