Access to employers
Each school within Leeds City College has its own industry links that you can benefit from. There’s a variety of ways that employers get involved with the college from working with curriculum on course material to offering work experience.
Additionally, Leeds City College has its own bank of employer links that work with the college to accept you for work experience or work placements. By gaining access to employers, you can gain industry insight as well as valuable work experience.

You will be treated like an adult at Leeds City College which is why we have a no uniform policy. Additionally, you will be encouraged to think independently and work autonomously during your studies.
Although you will be encouraged to learn and grow, we still offer plenty of support to remove all barriers to learning. Our support network is extensive and encompasses all aspects of college life.

i2i Football Academy
We work closely with partners to provide exit routes on to USA scholarships or prepare players for professional clubs and university. UEFA and academy coaches work with players three times a week, utilising the support of performance analysis, strength and conditioning, and nutrition.

Leeds Rhinos Foundation
Our partnership with Leeds Rhinos gives young players a different pathway to progressing to a professional club. The college team is coached by Leeds Rhinos Academy coaches and training is based at the Leeds Rhinos training facilities, including Headingley Stadium.
Leeds Rhinos also help us by providing talks and careers advice to our students through the medium of rugby league. We also have upcoming plans for Leeds Rhinos Netball and Leeds Rhinos Women’s Rugby League. For more information on our sports academies, please contact Anthony Gallagher at email@example.com.
Whether you want to pursue a hobby, make new friends or help drive positive change across the college, we have lots of societies for you to get involved in. Some of our most popular societies include: Basketball Society, Football Society, Table Tennis Society, LGBTQ+ Society, Debating Society, Islamic Society, Afro-Caribbean Society and African Carribean Society.
We’re always open to new ideas and suggestions, so if you have a great idea for a society, why not start your own? Our dedicated Sports and Societies Officer is a good point of contact if you’d like to propose a new society.
Run by students for students, Leeds City College Students’ Union (LCCSU) is an independent organisation. It works in partnership with Leeds City College to improve the education of students, promote student-led activity and enhance the student experience. LCCSU offers representation for students and has plenty of opportunities, societies and events for students to get involved in.
Student Voice is also part of LCCSU, this system is your opportunity to share your thoughts on college life and how your experience can be improved. This feedback is passed to heads of department, the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and the board of governors. This feedback is overseen by LCCSU so we can monitor actions.

The Big Debate
This annual event has run for two years covering social issues that affect Leeds City College students. Featuring an expert panel made up of notable figures with insight into the issue chosen, The Big Debate is an opportunity for you to be part of an active audience and quiz panellists on their responses.
The most recent Big Debate covered gender roles in society. The panel included an award-winning author and TEDx speaker Jenny Garrett, University of Essex psychologist Gijsbert Stoet, TransLeeds coordinator Natasha Handley and National Education Union activist Sally Kincaid.
This summer school works with the government-run initiative Cyberfirst Defenders. With an emphasis on female students, Cyberfirst Defenders is a non-residential summer school for 14-17 year olds with an interest in computing. This week-long event addresses the skills gap within the cyber security industry.
The event complements the GCSE computing curriculum and offers practical methods to help protect and secure everyday devices, apps and software. You will gain practical experience of cyber security and learn how to protect yourself and your own family network. Additionally, you will learn about encryption and how to find and prevent vulnerabilities.
You will be encouraged to participate in work experience opportunities that are relevant to your course to improve your progression.
Each individual school has a portfolio of industry links and partnerships for students to benefit from. Additionally, Student Life has a dedicated team that specialises in work experience and progression.
Student Life offers careers advice and can provide support for you to gain work experience. You can also enquire about volunteering opportunities.
We have lots of exciting events and trips taking place throughout the year. Enjoy specialised parties, celebrations, day trips and more! We’re constantly updating our calendar and are open to suggestions for fun days.
Some of the exciting opportunities we have offered at college previously include a trip to Blackpool, an Alton Towers day trip and the PRYZM Xmas Party and End of Year Party. Keep your eyes peeled for more events and trips around the college.

Examples of the support that we offer include financial, mental health, confidential sexual health, safeguarding, careers, progression, enrichment, work experience and more. Why not drop in to your nearest Student Life office on campus?
At college, you will have tutorial sessions that cover Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) themes. These tutorials are differentiated and reflective and aim to prepare you for active citizenship.
Our tutorials regularly explore different topics allowing you to become more open minded and educated on different areas of PSHE. Tutorials encourage you to start discussions and share your thoughts in a safe and collaborative environment.
Extra help and support
It’s ok to need some extra support… We’re here to help.
If you are struggling financially, we may be able to help. Alongside gaining support with travel passes, free meals and childcare, we can help you apply for the Learner Support Fund. We also offer free sanitary products to students who need them, these can discreetly be given at reception.

Mental health and wellbeing
At Leeds City College we have mental health first aiders and specialist counselling and mental health officers who can offer guidance and direct you to support services. If you are worried about someone else, our safeguarding team is also on hand for support and advice. Our Oasis room can be accessed by students needing a time out. In addition, our therapy dog Jeffrey is on hand especially at times of stress such as exams.
We are committed to ensuring that all our students and staff are kept safe and protected from harm. To achieve this, we emphasise the importance of safeguarding, Prevent duty and adherence to British values. Safeguarding covers anything that may pose a risk to the safety and wellbeing of an individual.
The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff is a top priority at Leeds City College. All staff are trained in safeguarding and child protection and our dedicated safeguarding team is on hand for advice and support. In our last Ofsted inspection, safeguarding in the college was judged to be ‘effective’.
College culture, behaviour and attendance
Leeds City College provides a secure, welcoming and friendly learning environment where students feel safe, enjoy learning and can achieve their goals. We recognise that positive behaviour needs to be modelled and can be learned. Our I’m In strategy means that all staff and students have a responsibility for the inclusive culture in college.
This policy lays out our approach to open and honest relationships and communications, built on restorative approaches, with an emphasis on cooperation, cohesion, and de-escalation and mediation in resolving behavioural issues. Primarily the key premise is that behaviour is a form of communication of an emotional need (whether conscious or unconscious) to be viewed in the context of relationships rather than an internal problem.

Our approach to attendance improvement puts student experience at the centre. We recognise that absence represents one way that a student responds to their personal experiences, in and/or outside college.

Our Way of Learning
We’re here to help you get the qualifications that will take you to your next steps. Below are examples of some of the help we offer and campaigns we run.
Help with Studying
You will gain academic support from their teachers as well as coaching tutors. You can also visit Learning Resource Centres (LRC) where they can access a range of resources including books, Chromebooks, journals, newspapers, CDs and DVDs. Additionally, you can take part in exam preparation sessions. Students with learning difficulties can also gain High Needs support, exam support and access to assistive technology.
Maths and English
Government policy states that all students who do not have at least a grade 4 in GCSE English and maths will have to re-sit the qualification. At Leeds City College, if you do not have a grade 4, English and maths will be built into your qualification. In the last year, more than 3,000 students re-sat their English and maths with us.
I’m In is our college-wide strategy for student engagement and sets out our expectations. All staff contribute to I’m In. You can expect to be included and respected, inspired by your teachers, influenced by inventive learning experiences, informed of all of the opportunities for you to get involved, individually supported, instrumental in change by being listened to, and working in innovative learning environments.
We will expect you to be in on time, inclusive and respectful of others, inquisitive and take an active part in your learning, involved in everything you can be in and out of class, independent, and influential by having a voice in college.
Restorative Practice (RP) is a proactive process based around the power of communication. It looks at repairing harm, building resilience and connections, developing relationships and understanding the power of communication. It is an approach based on a principle of how working with each other, rather than doing things to one another, can build a stronger community and working environment.
In college, RP builds a sense of community, has a positive impact on students and staff, enhances the student experience, improves attendance and retention, and reduces exclusions.

We aim to create an inclusive learning and working environment that respects and celebrates differences and individuality. We want everyone to feel able to fully participate in college life and achieve their full potential. We are Investors in Diversity accredited and working towards Stonewall accreditation.
Our key themes for our equality objectives are to promote social mobility, accessibility, voice and influence, diversity and wellbeing while challenging discrimination. Each department and business support team has dedicated EDI Champions who promote EDI, help run campaigns, and monitor the progress towards department equality actions in the Quality Improvement Plan.
