Passionate about helping others: former ESOL student finds voice in students’ union

Posted: August 16, 2023

Student Augustine Martins has made big strides since he moved to the UK in 2018 from Italy with his family.

Originally from Nigeria, Augustine started at Leeds City College in September last year on the English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course.

Over the last year, he has served as the Students’ Union (SU) Quarry Hill Campus Officer and will be resuming the role in the next academic year.

Speaking about his SU post, Augustine said he was inspired by Project & Fundraising Coordinator, Karim Ibrahim, who encouraged him to take part in a range of sports activities.

“Karim Ibrahim supported me by involving me in a lot of sports programmes.

This helped me develop my confidence and skills, and meant I was able to engage with students better.

It also helped me promote activities in the college more effectively.”

An avid footballer, with a passion for research and education, he said the support he has received from his team over the last 12 months has been invaluable.

“The guidance I have received from my team and college has been so helpful and has supported me on and off campus.

“I have really enjoyed working with the students’ union and with students, especially planning and organising events.”

Empowering students

Augustine, who is passionate about empowering people, is hoping to work closely with the college’s Student Life team in September to help more students secure apprenticeships and part-time jobs.

“I would really like to work alongside heads of departments and teachers to create more accessible opportunities, such as interview preparation and catch up classes for all students on campus, especially those who are unable to be at college due to illness or other personal circumstances, as no student should fall behind.”

Plans for the future

Augustine, who will be starting a Level 3 course in health science and social care this year, is hoping to study nursing at university.

“I am really passionate about healthcare and helping people and I am hoping to one day become a nurse.
“Leeds City College is a friendly environment and my tutors have really helped me identify what I want to do in the future. I would really like to encourage those considering a course here to do so as you will learn a lot and receive the support you need to achieve your goals.”
