This qualification was developed by SEG in line with legislation requirements, ensuring that practitioners working alongside small animals meet industry standards and work in line with regulatory guidelines.
This qualification provides learners with the chance to develop their knowledge and skills further in ensuring that all emergency situations are dealt with appropriately and professionally.
Overview
The course consists of the following learning outcomes:
- Be able to understand key principles of small animal first aid
- Be able to categorise small animal emergencies
- Be able to recognise and manage small animal emergency situations
- Be able to apply first aid in small animal emergency situations
- Be able to understand how health checks monitor and evaluate a small animal patients’ health status
Please note the certificate you receive will be for the SEG Awards Level 3 Award in Small Animal First Aid. This qualification will predominantly be focused on canines but will also cover other species where appropriate.
Students are not permitted to bring their own dogs to this course.
Who is this course for?
This course is for those aged 18 and over, who would like to progress within an occupation with small animals, currently working with small animals or who have previous experience and qualifications and want to develop their skills further.

Benefits and skills
This qualification has been developed in line with current legislation including the basic skills, knowledge and behaviours learners are required to have in order to appropriately and calmly respond to small animal first aid emergencies. This qualification will give you the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to approach animal first aid emergencies calmly and confidently.
Entry requirements
All learners need to be 18+
Available apprenticeships and progression options
Learners may progress onto full time courses within the department such as Animal Management.
Assessment types
This course is assessed through practical and theory assessments. Some theory assessments will be required to be completed independently outside of the classroom.
