A rewarding opportunity to train as a teaching assistant and to work under the direct instruction of well experienced teaching/senior staff. Supporting the children/young people of the school by providing exciting lessons so they make the best progress they can, but also providing guidance and support so they can develop.

Overview

 

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

  • To work under the direct instruction of teaching/senior staff, usually in the classroom with the teacher.
  • To support access learning for pupils and provide general support to the teacher in the management of pupils and the classroom.
  • Provide general support to staff and pupils, including preparation and routine maintenance of resources/equipment.
  • Attend to the pupils’ personal needs and implement related personal programmes, including social, health, physical, hygiene, first aid, and welfare matters.
  • To supervise and support pupils ensuring their safety and access to learning.
  • Establish good relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding appropriately to individual needs.
  • Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.
  • Prepare the classroom as directed for lessons and clear afterwards and assist with the display of pupils’ work.
  • Be aware of pupil problems/progress/achievements and report to the teacher as agreed.
  • Undertake pupil record keeping as requested and other basic record keeping.
  • Support the teacher in managing pupil behaviour, reporting difficulties as appropriate.
  • Provide clerical/administrative support e.g. photocopying, typing, filing, collecting/recording money etc.
  • Gather/report information from/to parents/carers as directed.
  • Support pupils in using basic ICT as directed.

Things to Consider

You will be expected to be flexible with the working hours to ensure ratios are maintained. During the year you will be expected to participate in additional events out of the normal working hours, for example, parent’s evening and Open days. There is a degree of lifting and carrying that you will need to be able to carry out. There is a requirement to submit to an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau background check.

Training to be Delivered

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.
