How a simple audit sparked a sustainability shift at The Vine
Posted: July 24, 2025
Sometimes meaningful change starts with a small question. At The Vine, that question was: What if we could make our everyday hygiene practices more sustainable?
A routine wet wipe audit quickly became the spark for something bigger. Staff discovered just how many single-use wipes were being consumed across classrooms and communal areas. They realised that, with a few thoughtful adjustments, they could dramatically reduce waste without compromising cleanliness. So the team acted.
Microfibre cloths – washable, durable, and far kinder to the environment – were introduced as a practical alternative. Almost immediately, The Vine saw a reduction in single-use waste and a positive shift in daily habits. What began as a simple audit evolved into a shared commitment to sustainability.
This change didn’t stay within The Vine’s walls. Across the wider college community, curriculum teams in Health, Science and Social Care, Higher Education Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), and Construction and Building Services began embedding lessons around water conservation, environmental responsibility, and sustainable practice. Learners were not only keeping their environments cleaner – they were understanding why sustainable choices matter.
By turning a small observation into action, we’ve sparked a culture where sustainability is part of learning, part of teaching, and part of everyday life. It’s a reminder that the biggest impacts often start with the simplest of ideas.
