In October, students at our Printworks campus experienced a live Road Traffic Collision (RTC) demonstration on campus, courtesy of the White Watch from Hunslet Fire Station.

The event began at 10am and over 300 spectators from the college came to watch, with over 100 joining in the demonstration.

The event was a collaborative effort involving the Motor Vehicle department and Level 3 Media Make-up students, who used their technical skills to apply realistic injuries using SFX make-up to the volunteer “casualties”.

The project was a fantastic example of cross-department teamwork, combining expertise with creative artistry. The media make-up learners worked closely with motor vehicle students to understand the mechanics of a car accident and translate that into convincing special effects makeup.

A day to remember

During the demonstration, the Fire Crew (led by Joe Richards) gave a detailed live explanation of the simulated crash. Staff and students then watched the fire crew use specialist cutting equipment to remove the “injured passengers” from the vehicle.

Motor Vehicle students saw important aspects of road safety, specifically the dangers of fires and electric vehicles.

The event was also supported by the fire service’s Youth Interventions Team about driving without a seatbelt, driving under the influence and making safe choices behind the wheel.
