Tech giants introduce students to opportunities in growing tech sector

Posted: September 12, 2022

Amazon Web Services and XDesign have been talking to students at our Printworks Campus about opportunities in the digital sector.

Representatives from the industry giants shared their expertise with students from the School of Digital & IT during last week’s visit.

The event was a chance for students to learn about the broad range of disciplines within the tech sector, including programming, cyber security, and data management.

The visit was also part of Leeds Digital Careers Festival roadshow, which aims to showcase the diverse digital employment opportunities available across the city.

Rob Whitehead, Deputy Head of the School of Digital & IT, said: “This event has been such a great opportunity for prospective students of all ages to talk directly with employers to discuss ways into tech careers.

“With growing demand for digital and IT jobs regionally and nationally, the presentations provided a valuable insight into the types of roles available and the pathways students can take to access them.”

The Future Talent Plan

The festival is part of a wider initiative, The Future Talent Plan, to invest in sectors and skills that make up emerging and vital areas of Leeds’ economy. The plan is designed to provide the best opportunities for local people and businesses and, as a partner, Leeds City College is working with firms and providers across the city to make this happen.

Bill Jones, Executive Principal of Leeds City College, said: “Future Talent is what we’re all about.

“As a further education college, it’s our mission to ensure that the people of Leeds are provided with the skills they need to thrive in sectors that are vital to the world around them.”

The plan has placed a particular emphasis on the need for more people with digital skills, and in turn a need for educational opportunities in that sector.

Rob added: “The Leeds Digital Careers Festival has allowed us to showcase Leeds City College’s fantastic digital curriculum, including the broad range of qualifications and pathways open to students.”

Later this month, Printworks Campus will host its next event in the Future Talent series: Inspiring Future Talent in Digital.
