Course Information

The CPQ is a new, competence-based qualification framework, that reflects the changing requirements of a rapidly evolving legal and business landscape. Developed in consultation with employers and other stakeholders, CPQ combines a focus on technical expertise and practical skills with developing the core behaviours required to drive forward thinking, commercially minded, adaptable lawyers who really understand the clients they serve.

In addition, the CPQ develops commercial understanding, allowing CILEx Lawyers to offer organisations much more than just authorised practitioner status. The CPQ develops commercial understanding, allowing CILEx Lawyers to offer organisations much more than just authorised practitioner status.

The CPQ ensures the appropriate progression and teaching of:

  • How legal technology presents an opportunity to improve processes for customers and organisations
  • How to evaluate and manage risk
  • How to communicate effectively, with different stakeholders and in different settings
  • Approaches to managing conflict, building relationships and working across boundaries
  • The importance of exploring developments in the sector, responding to change and seeking continuous improvement

The CPQ is a single qualification made up of three elements:

  • Assessment of legal knowledge and skills
  • Ethics and Professional Responsibility eLearning modules
  • Professional Experience

Each stage of the CPQ is aligned to a job role described in the CILEx
Competency Framework.

The Foundation stage aligns to the role of a Paralegal/Case Handler. It
allows the demonstration of the fundamental awareness of the law underpinning
key practice areas. Those taking the Foundation Stage of the CPQ will be able to
understand their professional and regulatory responsibilities, duties of working
in a legal environment and make a positive contribution in a supporting role
whilst under supervision.

The Foundation Stage has five mandatory modules which must be completed.

The programme will be taught in the dedicated HE building, University Centre.
All of the classrooms for the course are within this building, all classrooms
are equipped with smart TVs and computers for presentations and lectures. Within
the building there is a dedicated HE library, a study zone for quiet independent
work, tutorial rooms that can be booked for group work or private study, a
