BLOG – The importance of the LGBTQ+ community
Posted: February 7, 2022
While we’re in the midst of LGBTQ+ History Month, it’s important to take a look at the role and significance of the LGBTQ+ community.
Understanding community
The Centre for Education and Inclusion Research (CEIR) at Sheffield Hallam University investigated what the word ‘community’ meant to LGBTQ+ people. The study revealed that being part of the LGBTQ+ community was particularly important when ‘coming out’, with many mentioning how they felt a strong connection to other LGBTQ+ people who have had similar experiences and can offer support.
The findings also showed that generally, LGBTQ+ people see the word as having positive connotations, linking to wellbeing and heightened self-esteem.
Helping to make a change
The LGBTQ+ community has historically felt excluded from the rest of society, and we all have a role to play in making members of that community feel accepted and understood.
One way in which we can do more to support the community is by being an ally to LGBTQ+ people. We can do this through keeping up-to-date on key terms and concepts, educating ourselves on the history of LGBTQ+ activism and getting involved with the community to show support by attending local events.
To discover LGBTQ+ events in Leeds, there are a range of activities on Eventbrite.
