‘An amazing experience’ – T Level student reflects on her first year

Posted: October 12, 2022

When Jodie Powell was looking at options for pursuing a childcare career, she knew she wanted to get on a course that was both in-depth and included a strong vocational element.

T Levels, a new two-year qualification that offers students a mix of classroom learning and work experience, immediately appealed to her.

Jodie has now begun the second year of her Level 3 Technical Qualification in T Level Education and Childcare, specialising as an early years educator, and is convinced she made the right choice.

A fast-paced route into childcare

She said: “This T level in childcare has been an amazing course as I’ve had great first-hand experience in the area I’ve always been interested in.

“I chose this course over other options, such as A levels, because I felt that this was a more in-depth way into the childcare sector.

“This course offers a fast-paced route into childcare, thanks to the placement and knowledge it provides. You have the opportunity to work with amazing practitioners in placement, and the ability to use the knowledge you learn in college, where you are based.”

One T Level is worth the equivalent of three A levels, and Jodie is hoping to progress to university after completing her course, with a view to becoming a reception teacher.

She would definitely recommend the T Level route to anyone interested in working in childcare.

‘A great way to gain experience’

She added: “My favourite part of the course has been building relationships with the children at my placement. This is because I feel you  learn best when you actually apply the knowledge to real life.

“I’ve also enjoyed the curriculum, and found the topics covered in the first year very interesting.

“This T level can open up lots of routes, not just into teaching, and is a great way to gain experience in the sector to take with you to future employment.”
