Introduction
If you have a strong interest in law, wish to return to education and progress to university, this course is for you. Access courses are recognised by many universities as an alternative to A levels. Please check the individual requirements of your chosen course for confirmation.
With this course you will strengthen your academic skills while studying advanced law topics. You will explore consumer, employment, negligence, homicide, and family law. You’ll also study the court system and legal personnel.
Please note that there will be an induction session one week before the start of the course.
Overview
The HE Access to Law course is designed to provide students with the foundation knowledge and skills necessary for pursuing higher education in law. It covers essential legal principles, theories, and practices, offering a comprehensive introduction to the field of law.
The course typically includes modules on criminal law, contract law, and legal research, among others. It is aimed at mature students or those who have been out of formal education for some time, facilitating their transition to university-level study. Successful completion of the course can lead to entry into undergraduate law programs and other related disciplines.
Fees and Funding
Fees: £3022
If you are 19-23, and don’t already have a full level 3 qualification, course fees will be waived. This means you don’t have to pay anything for the course.
If you are 19-23 and already have a full level 3 qualification or 24+, you can take out an Advanced Learner Loan. Student Finance England will ‘write off’ any outstanding Advanced Learner Loan balances you owe for an Access to HE course once you have completed your degree. This means you might not have to repay the loan. You will be studying alongside other adults aged 19 and over, and will be fully supported by experienced tutors.

Course units/modules
- Court System & Legal Personnel: This unit explores the structure of the court system and the roles of various legal professionals within it, including judges, lawyers, and court clerks.
- Elements of a Crime: Students learn about the fundamental components that constitute a crime, such as actus reus (the act) and mens rea (the intent).
- Law of Homicide: This unit examines the legal definitions, classifications, and implications of different types of homicide, including murder and manslaughter.
- Law of Negligence: Focused on the principles of duty of care, breach, and causation, this unit covers how negligence is established and the legal consequences that follow.
- Sources of Law: Students are introduced to the various origins of law, including statutory law, common law, and international treaties.
- Formation of a Contract: This unit covers the essential elements required for creating a legally binding contract, such as offer, acceptance, consideration, and intention to create legal relations.
- Consumer Law: Examining the rights and protections afforded to consumers, this unit discusses legislation related to product safety, unfair practices, and dispute resolution.
- Academic Writing & Family Law: Combining skills development in legal writing with an overview of family law, this unit addresses issues such as marriage, divorce, and child custody.
- Law & Morality: Students explore the relationship between legal rules and moral principles, considering how ethics influence and intersect with the law.
- Employment Law: This unit delves into the legal framework governing the employer-employee relationship, covering topics like contracts of employment, discrimination, and workplace rights.
- Researching Opportunities in HE: Focused on helping students identify and pursue higher education opportunities, this unit includes guidance on applications, personal statements, and financial planning.
- Human Rights & Presentation Skills: Covering the fundamentals of human rights law, this unit also develops students' abilities to effectively present and communicate legal arguments.
- Law of Negligence: This unit revisits the principles of negligence, providing deeper insights into case law and the application of legal standards in negligence claims.
Entry requirements
- Age Requirement: Applicants are required to be 19 years or older at the start of the course.
- Educational Background: Applicants need to demonstrate a good level of literacy and numeracy, and hold at least a Level 4 in English GCSE
- Motivation and Commitment: Prospective students are expected to show a strong interest in pursuing a career in law and a commitment to completing the course.
- Work or Life Experience: Relevant work experience or life experience that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to succeed in higher education can be beneficial.
- English Language Proficiency: For non-native English speakers, proof of English language proficiency, such as an IELTS score, is required.
