Students excel in practical placements

22nd May 2020

As part of the Health and Social Care Extended Diploma Level 3 course, many students have completed placements working across the NHS in local hospitals.

The students worked across the two main sites of Leeds Teaching Hospital at St James and Leeds General Infirmary. During their two-week placement, they were each allocated a nursing associate apprenticeship mentor who supported them in developing practical skills on the wards.

Molly Jones, who did her placement on the cardiology ward at Leeds General Infirmary, commented on the experience: “I learnt beneficial practical skills on the ward, such as taking blood pressure and temperature and mixing medicines. It has helped me prepare for a career in this field by grasping a detailed understanding of the different units and protocols. I’m looking forward to starting my nursing apprenticeship when I finish college.”

Megan O’Connor gained experience at St James Hospital: “My placement was amazing – I learnt about personal care and got to see first-hand the role of clinical support workers, which is a career I want to progress into. This experience has supported my learning as I can now begin my career with a strong understanding of the roles and responsibilities. I’m hoping to apply for a job as a clinical support worker as soon as possible.”

Vanessa Aggrey, said: “Working at St James Hospital in the oncology ward provided me with valuable insight into working within the NHS. I worked with the discharge team and nurses to check observations, including temperatures, blood pressure and pulse. I learnt a great deal during my two weeks and it’s given me a clear idea of the role I want to progress in.”

All of these students intend to pursue a university degree in nursing, social work and mental health or complete a nursing apprenticeship degree.
