Student who competed in national barista competition comes second

A level student, Ayse Selcuk, who reached the final of a national barista competition earlier this year, came second.

The beverage extraordinaire had to prepare, make and serve four espresso based drinks, four milk based drinks and four signature drinks which included Ayse’s Cherry Bakewell Warmer. She said: “This was a twist on the previous drink I served at the regional heats back in September. For that heat, I made a cherry bakewell ‘mochtail’ which was served cold. However, as we’re approaching winter months I thought it was only fitting to serve a warm drink.

Ayse was competing against five other top baristas from around the UK and was shocked to be awarded second place. “It was honestly unreal to come second. I still can’t believe it.

“My lovely store manager, Ginta, came to support me from work. I also had the support from the regional manager of Insomnia, as well as other Aramark managers. On top of this, I had the support from my colleagues which I am really grateful for. I wouldn’t have been able to compete without them!”

“With the aspiration to own my own coffee shop one day I’m hoping I’ll be able to put my barista skills to the test! I’d love to help train and support future baristas who’d like to compete too.

“The level of competition was so strong. I wouldn’t have thought I’d ever be in the finals, let alone to have come second. It really has changed my life. The experience was a once in a life time opportunity and I’m really glad I took it whilst I could. It was a wonderful experience and if you’re lucky enough to take it, go for it!”
