Access course student pursues dream with unconditional offer at top university

9th March 2020

Maria Kennedy had always dreamt of being a midwife but missed out on the entry grades. After completing an Access to Higher Education course at Leeds City College, she received an unconditional offer at a Russell Group University.

We spoke with her to find out more about her journey to a top university.

Why did you choose an Access course?

I was working at a nursery but felt like I had peaked in my career – I was ready for a fresh challenge and jumped at the chance to chase my dream of becoming a midwife.

How did you find the course?

I loved it. The team were so supportive and always on hand to give guidance and advice every step of the way. It was great to be treated like an adult, given the trust to manage our own time and work.

During my time at Leeds City College, I made some great friends while gaining relevant experience for my future which was flexible around my current lifestyle.

The course provided effective insight into university life, including workload levels and required skills such as referencing. Receiving an unconditional university offer is a phenomenal testament to how effective the course is in accessing higher education.

When do you start your degree?

I will begin studying for my Midwifery degree at the University of Leeds this September. I never thought I would be able to study at this prestigious university, so I’m incredibly excited to start.

How has the Access to Higher Education course helped you prepare for university?

This course not only gave me the required qualifications, but has allowed me to develop a real understanding into academic life and the skills I will be utilising at university. The insight and expertise I have developed has been invaluable as I would have not learnt this at school and has given me the perfect head start once I begin the course.

What are your career goals?

I have always aspired to become a midwife and can’t wait to be fully qualified in the future.
