Leeds City College goes the extra mile to provide wholesome meals for the homeless
Leeds City College is going the ‘extra mile’ for a good cause, providing monthly meals, as well as turning surplus food into healthy and delicious spreads for its chosen charity of the year, St George’s Crypt.
Helen Lunt, Deputy Head for Apprenticeships and Commercial at Leeds City College, said: “Part of our commitment is to support local charities and we chose St George’s Crypt as the charity we could best support.
“We have seen how much love, support and generosity is poured into the crypt, and helping
the homeless and vulnerable. This is what inspired us to give something back to the community we live and work in.
“We’re hoping that the meals prepared by our apprentices will make a real difference and make the crypt a happier, safer and more comfortable place for those who really need our support.”
Currently the apprentices and students, alongside catering manager, David Ford, and Bakery tutor, Joe Cavalier, prepare a hot casserole and bread for 50 people.
Helen said: “We often supplement some of the dishes we prepare when we have any ingredients that need utilising. For example, last month we prepared a pot of mushroom soup from some mushrooms we had left over. We find that this contributes to our aim of reducing food waste and being more environmentally friendly.”
The college hopes to take the initiative one step further by offering support to the service users with free haircuts and beard trims, as well as work experience and support with careers advice.
