Former student merges creative arts with parenting

2nd October 2019

Former performing arts student, Faye Kenny studied at Leeds City College back in 2005, which was then Thomas Danby. She now runs the successful children’s events company BoomChikkaBoom, hosting family friendly raves in venues across Leeds. We caught up with her to find out more.

What made you choose this subject?

I had an interest in performing arts and remember enjoying the open evening.

How was your experience?

I loved my college experience and met life-long friends. I learnt a lot about myself and my craft and gained confidence in performance as well as other topics.

What did you do after leaving college?

I went to Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts to study the BA hons in Acting.

How did the college help you get to where you are now?

My tutor (Ken Reid) persuaded me to apply for drama schools, rather than universities. Something I didn’t think I could do, and for that I’ll always be grateful.

Tell us about how you set up your business?

After having my son Ziah (now 7) I merged my interest in the arts with being a parent. I spotted a lot of gaps in the market when it came to being social as a family and decided to go for it!

How successful has it been?

During my maternity leave, I was able to let the business grow organically. Boomchikkaboom is now in its 7th year and continues to keep growing.

What are your plans for the future?

We’ve worked with some students at Leeds City College on a project before summer and now we are forging relationships in other departments. I’m really looking forward to Light Night as we’re hosting some family raves in the new Quarry Hill Campus.
