Access course sets adult learner up for success

11th January 2021

Adult learner, Liam Barrett, found his confidence knocked after struggling to finish his A levels.

With his sights set on returning to education to pursue a career in the legal sector, he joined the Access to HE Law course at Leeds City College.

Taking time to reflect

When starting A levels, Liam found the transition from high school to college challenging, with the educational demands creating added pressure.

“I began studying A levels during a difficult personal period, and soon realised that along with a significant workload, this path was not suited for me at the time.

“I decided to take a break from education to allow me time to reflect on the path I wanted to take, and in the meantime worked full-time in retail and finance positions.”

Laying down the law

During his two year break from education, Liam developed a keen interest in law and felt this discipline would offer exciting prospects.

“Coming back to college at the age of 20 after taking time out was an initially daunting thought. Abruptly leaving A levels hugely affected my confidence in my own academic ability, but the Access to HE Law course seemed to offer the best support for students from a range of backgrounds.”

Access to knowledge

Bringing with him a zest for learning and determination to succeed, Liam embraced all aspects of the course.

“The programme gave me a brilliant foundation of legal knowledge, greatly improved my functional skills and massively boosted my personal and academic confidence. The course had learners from all ages and backgrounds, allowing me to build lasting friendships with people that I may never have come across in the outside world.

“Tutors were knowledgeable, friendly and deeply cared about the progress of their students. We studied a wide range of topics including family, criminal, tort, consumer and employment law, as well as learning how to effectively research, produce academic assignments and seek out opportunities.”

Rewarding experience

Since completing the course, Liam progressed to higher education study.

“The programme enabled me to gain a qualifying law degree at University Centre Leeds and gain experience in the legal sector, including being appointed as a magistrate.

“I’m currently completing my teacher training to become a law lecturer. The Access course has perfectly set me up for a fruitful career in the industry!”
