INTERVIEWEE – DONNA FEENY – Head of Travel, Food & Drink (SPEAKING)

Donna Feeny – “Hello, my name is Donna Feeny I’m the head of the school of travel, food and drink at the printworks campus.”

Donna Feeny – “We’re a fantastic further education institute in the UK and we deliver amazing aviation courses, we’ve got facilities at the printworks campus that are second to none.”

Donna Feeny – “We’ve got the air cabin mockup where the students that come here will spend a lot of time on their course within this simulated environment and they will do a lot of practical work. They can do emergencies, safety demos, the service side of things as well.”

Donna Feeny – “When students leave Leeds City College as aviation students they are fully prepared to be projected straight into the industry.”

Donna Feeny – “All the tutors keep updated with industry so they are all current and up to date. We have excellent links with the industry which we use to enhance what we teach and to support our students into work after the course, the whole idea of this is to get the students into work. So people like Jet2, we have guest speakers in from Jet2 all the time we have good links with them. Just last week we had Emirates cabin crew in talking to the students during lockdown over a google meets call.”

Donna Feeny – “We have excellent links with Leeds Bradford Airport and it’s a really exciting time for Leeds Bradford Airport, I’m not sure if you’ve seen in the news but in 3 years time they have plans to open their brand new terminal at Leeds Bradford. It’s huge, it’s so impressive and due to our links our students can come and study here and be exactly where they need to be in order to get the jobs in this brand new terminal as soon as it takes off.”

Donna Feeny – “We pride ourselves on exacting standards at Leeds City College and it emulates that in line with what airlines require as well, which helps to prepare the students and you can see that in college with our students with the uniform that they wear. So again our students take pride in how they come to college every day, they dress smart, they are exactly in line with what airlines would require and they are striking uniforms and we are really proud of them every day. This 12-month course is your introduction to the exciting world of aviation, operating as cabin crew. You’ll be taught by passionate tutors who are former cabin crew themselves, with a wealth of experience in both long and short-haul flights. You’ll also learn all aspects of the role – including safety and emergency procedures – while developing customer service skills. You’ll even take part in practical assessments in our state-of-the-art simulated aircraft cabin. We offer industry-related trips to take part in British Airways training, trips to Manchester Airport and Wet Drills training to help you gain additional skills to kick-start your aviation career.

Reach new heights in your aviation career with this vibrant 12-month course – allowing you to develop key industry skills in aviation communications and conflict management, and broaden your knowledge of the UK aviation industry. On completion, you may choose to progress onto our 90-Credit Aviation Operations BTEC Diploma Level 3.

Advance your aviation career with this two-year course. After completing the Subsidiary Diploma in Aviations Operations Level 3, you’ll be eligible to progress on to this optional course in your second year. You’ll build on the knowledge gained in the previous programme and gain key industry skills such as team leadership. You’ll also broaden your knowledge of aviation terminology and understand how to handle passengers at the airport – while receiving job application guidance to prepare you for employment in the aviation industry.

What course types are available?

We offer many exciting programmes – from Air Cabin Crew to Aviation Operations courses. These range from level 2 city & guild diplomas to level 3 BTEC diplomas, so there’s something to suit every ability.

What progression routes can I take?

There are many opportunities available to students who complete an aviation course at Leeds City College – including further training and higher education. If you’re studying a level 2 course, you may wish to advance to level 3, and then take a degree in tourism and aviation at University Centre Leeds.

What industry links and partnerships do you have?

We’re proud to partner with Jet2, Leeds Bradford Airport, Malmaison, Hilton Hotel and Swissport. These strong connections mean we can pass on high-quality work placements to our students, allowing them to create memorable experiences with some of the best in the industry.

Is there any financial support available?

Eligible students can apply for the college bursary, which covers travel passes, college meals, trips and course uniform jackets. Those with children can also apply for a childcare fund to support their studies.

Will I have to wear a uniform?

All aviation students are required to wear the LCC aviation uniform and follow the course dress code. Our students look fantastic and feel proud to wear a design aligned with the aviation industry’s exceptional standards.

Which campus are you based at?

We are based at Printworks Campus on Leeds’ South Bank, just a short walk from the city centre.
