The Access to Higher Education (HE) Diploma in Education Professions is a tried and tested route for adult students who want to study primary teaching, secondary teaching and related subjects at university.

We have excellent relationships with the higher education institutions in Leeds, but our students also progress to other universities in the UK. The course is nationally recognised and validated by Gateway.

Course Information

This is a 60 credit diploma course. 15 credits are from ungraded units and 45
credits are from graded units. Graded units are assessed at pass, merit and
distinction (See unit/modules for breakdown of units).


This course aims to develop the skills and knowledge required for
undergraduate courses in Education. Students will develop their academic writing
skills and build a strong foundational knowledge in Educational Studies,
Developmental Psychology and Sociology. The English language units will develop
the communication skills required for degree level study. The Education Studies
Project will develop the independent research skills needed for degree level
study.

Who is this course for?

Are you interested in teaching in a primary or secondary school? Do you dream of going to university but don’t meet the entry requirements? If so, this course is perfect for you. The Access to HE Education Professions Diploma is recognised by many universities for entry into primary teaching degrees and related subjects.

You will be taught by a dedicated team of teachers, learning alongside other adults. You will study sociology, English and education topics. In addition, you will strengthen your study skills to support your learning. This course is a nationally recognised qualification and is validated by One Awards.

This course is designed for busy adult learners with other commitments. Delivery of the course is a mixture of class-based activities and online learning so you will attend college two days per week. In-class activities will involve lectures, group work, peer learning and project-based tasks. You will also have access to online course materials via Google Classroom, which can be accessed via your laptop, tablet and mobile phone.

Units / Modules

You will study ungraded units such as:

  • English and Academic Skills for Higher Education: 9 credits
  • Personal Development and Learning skills: 3 credits
  • Researching and Understanding Opportunities for Study in Higher Education: 3 credits

In addition, you will study these specialist topics (Graded at pass, merit and distinction)

  • Teaching and Learning: 9 credits
  • Education Studies Project: 9 credits
  • Psychology - Development in Childhood and Adolescence: 9 credits
  • Sociology: 9 credits
  • English Language Studies: 9 credits

During the course, you will go on to develop appropriate academic skills to ensure your success on the Access course and university. You will also develop the underpinning knowledge required to study education at degree level.

Assessment Types

Assessment is through a combination of coursework, exams and presentations.

Entry Requirements

Entry to the course is by interview. You will need GCSE English, and - ideally, maths and science grades A-C or 4-9 by the start of the course. However, students might be permitted to study GCSE Maths OR science alongside the Educational Studies pathway (Note: this will be at the discretion of the course leader).

Course Facts

History

If you are between 19-23, and don’t already have a full level 3 qualification, course fees will be waived. This means you don’t have to pay anything for the course.

Facilities

If you are 19-23 and already have a full level 3 qualification or 24+, you can take out an Advanced Learner Loan. Student Finance England will ‘write off’ any outstanding Advanced Learner Loan balances you owe for an Access to HE course once you have completed your degree. This means you might not have to repay the loan.

Extra Curriculum

You will be studying alongside other adults aged 19 and over, and will be fully supported by experienced tutors.
