Learners will gain introductory knowledge and understanding of the Forest School pedagogy and approach to Learning and Development. They will also gain practical skills to be able to support a Forest School programme.

NOCN Level 2 Award for Forest School Assistants Level 2 is designed to qualify learners to become a Forest School assistant, enabling them to take a proactive role in helping a Forest School practitioner plan and deliver a Forest School programme and supporting the learners in the outdoors.

Who is this course for?

The minimum age for this qualification is 18 years. This is a Forest School Association and Department for Education requirement. Additionally, learners must be able to support a Forest School Leader who is delivering a Forest School Programme. Learners may typically be school and college staff, youth workers, parent helpers and students.

  • Supporting a Forest School Programme: Practical Skills

On achievement of this qualification, learners will become a Forest School assistant, learners will:

  • Understand the Forest School ethos, principles and holistic approach to learning and development.
  • It will prepare learners for further study and employment in an outdoor environment.
  • Know how experiences can support learning and development at a Forest School
  • Be able to perform the role of Assistant at a Forest School in relation to the Forest School ethos, principles and criteria.
  • Know how to reflect on their own Forest School training.

Assessment Types

There are no specific assessment or evidence requirements for Supporting a Forest School Programme: Learning and Development unit. However, holistic assessment within and across units is encouraged.

For the second mandatory unit: Supporting a Forest School Programme: PracticalSkills. Learners will be assessed through observation and/or use of others witness testimony.

Learners must also submit authentic evidence making it clear what their contribution was to planning, delivery and evaluation. Additionally learners will need to carry out background reading and research and complete all aspects of the study programme.

Entry Requirements

The minimum age for this qualification is 18 years. This is a Forest School Association and Department for Education requirement. Additionally, learners must be able to support a Forest School Leader who is delivering a Forest School Programme. Learners will be interviewed prior to offering them a place to ensure learners are on the most appropriate course for their needs and to assess their academic abilities. A further conversation will be held where all the elements of the course are explained and learners are informed of the course requirements.

Career Progression

Level 2 is designed to qualify a learner to become a Forest School assistant, enabling them to take a proactive role in helping a Forest School practitioner plan and deliver a Forest School programme and supporting the learners in an outdoor environment.

This qualification prepares learners to progress to the Level 3 Certificate for Forest School Leaders or for further study and employment in the outdoors.

This NOCN qualification recognises a learner’s skills and knowledge and can support progression to employment, training and/or further education.
