This course is an introduction to initial counselling skills and will improve students’ effectiveness and understanding when working with others. The course will also cover personal development and self-care.

Course Information

Understand more clearly what counselling training entails and be able to make a more informed choice as to whether or not you are suited to undertake vocational counselling training as opposed to other types of training.

Assessment types:

Completion of a portfolio. Level 2 Certificate will be awarded.

Who is this course for?

1. Those who have an understanding of what counselling is about and are able to compare and contrast counselling with other forms of helping therapies.

2. Those who have some basic counselling skills and would like to further improve their own communication processes.

Units / Modules

To introduce students to the concept and nature of counselling and learn some practical counselling skills.

Units include:

  • Knowing about helping relationships,
  • Understand the basic skills needed in establishing and developing a helping relationship
  • Develop Self understanding

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but it is preferred that you have completed an Introductory course in Counselling or have covered a Counselling related discipline. A good level of English and ‘IT’ skills will be required as you will be required to produce a portfolio based on the course objectives.
