This qualification is for learners who aim to gain employment within the animal care industry, or progress to an apprenticeship or a high level animal management qualification.

Course Information

This qualification can be studied as a one-year full-time course, or as part
of a two-year, full-time study programme. The advanced technical certificate is
a standalone qualification, but can form one half of the first year of the
advanced technical extended diploma (720) in animal management should learners
wish to complete the two-year programme. The course includes both practical and
theoretical elements preparing learners for a career within the animal
management sector or for further study.


How to get to us


FlexiBus:


Students can travel from East Leeds to Temple Newsam via the FlexiBus and it
will bring you directly into the estate. The bus can be ordered 1 hour before it
is required and operates between 7am- 7pm Monday – Saturday. Fares start from
just £1.20. You can learn more about the designated routes, booking information

Alternative bus services that run in the area include the 19 and 19A. It is a
short walk from the bus stop to the college buildings.


Campus bus:


The campus bus will run from Leeds bus station directly to Temple Newsam
every day. It will cost £5 per week and is only bookable once the learner
enrols.


By train:


Temple Newsam is located 1.9 miles from Cross Gates train station, an
approximate 35-minute walk.


By car:


From the M1 take junction 46. Temple Newsam is a short drive from this exit,
there is on-site parking available.

Benefits / Skills

Learners are taught by subject specialists who have worked in a variety of contexts within the animal management sector. In addition, learners have access to a wide variety of species, including small mammals and exotics, housed within our purpose built animal care centre. Learners will also undertake farm practicals at Home Farm within the Temple Newsam estate.

Assessment Types

The course is assessed via:

  • Exams
  • Synoptic assessments
  • Internally assessed module assignments

Entry Requirements

4 GCSE’s including English OR maths. Learners will have the opportunity to re-take 1 GCSE alongside this qualification.

Career Progression

The advanced technical certificate is the academic equivalent of one A -level, should learners complete the two- year programme, this will be the equivalent of 2 A -levels, allowing learners to progress on to higher education should they wish. Learners get the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to undertake a variety of careers within the animal management sector.
