Our Supporting Reading with Phonics Course is a specialist course that will provide practical support to parents and children in a fun, engaging and open plan method of delivery. Parents and carers will explore how sharing stories, songs and rhymes help children to develop imagination, as well as listening, reading and number skills. Supported by a professional teacher parents and carers will make simple instruments and resources to use with their child at home and use songs and rhymes to make learning fun.

Our staff will help them unravel the mysteries of word shapes, phonics and sounds. Giving parents lots of tips, games and activities to do with their children to help their early sound and word recognition and reading skills. Designed to support in-school Early Years and KS1 programmes.

This course will give mums, dads, carers and grandparents the chance to learn new skills and help children learn in a fun and friendly way. You will explore how children are taught phonics, and how knowledge, and confidence, of phonics will improve their early reading.

Course Information

This course will be delivered by an experienced adult education specialist in
your school or centre with the focus of supporting parents of child learners at
your school so that they can in turn support struggling readers improve their
skills and progress.


Parents with the support of experienced course tutor will be shown and given
strategies and techniques to encourage and develop reading skills. These will
include; walk the word, decoding and rhyming games.


This course will successfully raise children’s achievement through the
development of your parents literacy skills and encourage them to develop and
provide a supportive home environment to promote children’s learning.


Research from the National Skills Council 2019 has shown that children and
parents who have attended family learning courses such as this one achieve more
at school and in later life.

This is a course or programme which is available to local community parents/carers run by the Family Learning Team at Leeds City College.

This course or programme is aimed at both parents and schools who wish to support, develop and motivate their children as they acquire communication skills and can help parents and carers become more confident in supporting their child's early learning and development.
