This qualification can be used as direct access to our Foundation Degree in Animal Management should you meet the additional entry requirements.

Course Information

This qualification is a one-year full-time course, or as part of a two-year, full-time study programme. The national foundation diploma is a standalone qualification, however it is the first year of the national extended diploma in animal management should learners wish to complete the two-year programme.

The course includes both practical and theoretical elements preparing learners for a career within the animal management sector or for further study. Learners aged 19-24 that have not achieved a level 3 qualification before may be able to have this funded under West Yorkshire Combined Authority funding, learners aged 19+ with an existing level 3 qualification or learners aged 24+ typically pay for their tuition fees with advanced learner loan, more details are available on the college website.


Who is this course for?

This qualification is for learners who aim to gain employment within the animal care industry, progress to an apprenticeship or a high level animal management qualification.

Units / Modules

Modules include the following:

  • Animal Biology
  • Animal Welfare and Ethics
  • Praactical Animal husbandry
  • Animal Behaviour
  • Animal health and diseases
  • Exotic Animal Husbandry

Benefits / Skills

Learners are taught by subject specialists who have worked in a variety of contexts within the animal management sector.

In addition learners have access to a wide variety of species, including small mammals and exotics housed within our purpose built animal care centre. Learners undertake farm practicals at Home Farm within the Temple Newsam estate.

Assessment Types

This course is assessed via:

  • Externally assessed exams
  • Externally assessed synoptic assessments
  • Internally assessed module assignments

Entry Requirements

5 GCSE’s including English, Maths and Science are a typical entry requirement for this qualification, however entry requirements will be considered on a case by case basis.

Career Progression

The foundation diploma is the academic equivalent of one and a half A-levels, should learners complete the two year programme, the equivalent of 3 A-levels. Learners get the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to undertake a variety of careers within the animal management sector.

This qualification can give learners direct access to our Foundation Degree in Animal Management and Behaviour after one year as long as they meet the requirements of the programme.
