Student Profile - Emma Wilkinson

When I sat my GCSE’s first time round I was homeless and didn’t get good grades, but I still managed to get into college where I re-sat my Maths, English Literature and Science, and enrolled on an NVQ in Health and Social Care. It was during the summer that I got a job in a salon as a receptionist and did this for the whole time I was at college. I then completed a beauty course and I loved working with the industry! My passion grew from there and I strived to do as many beauty courses as possible. After 6 years of progression in a tough industry working with some of the best of the business I decided that to be taken seriously within the beauty business industry I needed to further my education with a foundation degree.

I choose this particular course as it was the one that was relevant to my situation and the 2-day timetable meant I could carry on working. Everything I cover the modules can link directly to my work place. I prepared myself by getting a part time job and it developed me every day within my salon learning something new!

This course changed my working life, within six weeks of attending the course I was promoted to salon manager. As this is brand new to me, my course is a step by step guide for me in everyday working life  My whole time is now focused on progressing the salon which I do every week I attend my course. It's the most important thing I've ever done and I wouldn’t change it. But it's a lot of hard work and dedication because it's not easy, but worth it!! I've gained knowledge, and help by my fantastic tutors that are the best. The college offer the best resources in Leeds! The student internet is fantastic and easy to use!! This experience is the best ever and it's pushed me to take up new classes in ICT! And I've made some great friends!
